Database News
BIOTECHDS, BIOTECHABS: Biotechnology Abstracts file no longer updated
The updating of the Biotechnology Abstracts database (files BIOTECHDS and BIOTECHABS) has been discontinued from 2011.
The complete database including the 2010 data is still available as a closed file. Previous subscribers please note that while the BiotechDS file is still available, discounts no longer apply.
For additional information about these databases, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.
INPADOCDB/INPAFAMDB coverage enhancements
Enhanced coverage of Japanese patent citations
The coverage of JP-citations has significantly been enhanced. In January 2011 we included cited references for app. 1.1 million Japanese publications, mainly for Japanese published applications and utility models from 1973-1997.
Enhanced coverage of Japanese Utility Models
At the end of last year the coverage of Japanese publications was extended with app 860.000 Japanese utility models published from 1989-2002. The database records include basic bibliographic information like publication, application and priority details and IPC classification codes.
Legal status data for Colombia now available
Legal status data for Colombia are now available from 2003 onwards. Coverage includes 4 different legal status events which can be identified with EXPAND CO/LSC in the database.
Legal status data for Slovakia now available
Legal status data are now available for Slovakian patent publications from 1993 onwards. The coverage includes 26 different legal status events which can be identified with EXPAND SK/LSC in the database.
For additional information about the databases, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets.
Pricing for SELECTing Patent, Application, and Priority Numbers in the USPAT and IFI Database Families is Now Consistent with Similar Patent Databases on STN
New pricing has been introduced for the USPAT databases (USPATFULL / USPAT2 / USPATOLD) and the IFI databases (IFIPAT / IFIUDB / IFICDB) based on the number of records from which patent numbers are SELECTed. This introduction makes the pricing of USPAT and IFI database families consistent with other full-text and value-added patent databases on STN.
As with similar databases on STN, a per-record charge will now be applied in these databases whenever the SELECT command is executed for the following:
- patent numbers (PN, PNK, PATS)
- application numbers (AP, APPS)
- priority application numbers (PRN, PRAI)
For additional information about these databases, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.
New numeric property search in PCTFULL
Doing a key word search in full-text databases usually results in large answer sets with hundreds or thousands of documents. With the recent reload of PCTFULL, FIZ Karlsruhe introduced a new numeric property search feature, which allows for the first time to limit the search to e.g., particles in the nanoscale ( < 100 nm), catalytic reactions at low temperatures (e.g., -5 to 10°C), mixtures of a certain percentage range (e.g., 20-30%), and many more applications.

Get a grip on Searching REAXYSFILE on STN: Numeric Properties and Reactions
REAXYSFILE on STN is an excellent source for searching numeric properties and reactions. To refresh your knowledge in the efficient use of these features we offer several virtual and live training sessions.
E-Seminars:
- April 7 and April 12, 2011: Physical Property Searching in REAXYSFILE
- May 2 and May 12, 2011: Reaction Searching in REAXYSFILE
- May 9, 2011: REAXYSFILE: recherche de propriétés physico-chimiques
Public Seminars:
- May 22, 2011 Cincinnati, USA: Physical property and reaction searching in REAXYSFILE on STN
- As part of all upcoming STN user meetings: "Property searching on STN" in combination with CAS Registry ®, and Numeric Searching in PCTFULL, e.g. in Brussels, Munich, Copenhagen, Essen, Stockholm, Frankfurt, London, Manchester.
The database ReaxysFile produced by Elsevier contains fully searchable chemical structures and reactions, associated chemical and physical properties, and pharmacological and ecological data.
For additional information about REAXYSFILE, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.
WPINDEX/WPIDS/WPIX: 20 millionth invention registered
Thomson Reuters' Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPISM) database registered its 20 millionth invention, a patent record from Malaysia. This historic milestone is a result of recent enhancements in the coverage of Asia-Pacific patents in DWPI, including English-language abstracts and titles:
- granted patents from Malaysia
- granted patents from Thailand
- granted patents and utility models from the Philippines
- patent applications and granted patents from Vietnam
- patent applications and utility models from Russia.
The 20 millionth invention in DWPI, filed as MY 140727A, is from IEV Group, a Malaysian oil and marine industry services company headquartered in Selangor on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. It describes a band-saw system for cutting pipes, such as oil pipelines, underwater, supporting Malaysia's petroleum production and refining industry.
For additional information about these databases, refer to the STN Database Summary Sheets or STNGuide.
Tip of the Month
How to search for chemical structures in Derwent World Patents Index
A structure search in DWPI Chemistry Resource (DCR) follows the usual steps. You draw your structure, upload it to STN Express, run your structure search and display the results.
Get a step by step introduction in our live chemical structure search at
www.stn-international.com/live_searching_dcr_form.html.
This recorded session reviews the basic steps of a structure search, results display, and corresponding DWPI patent record retrieval and review.

FIZ Karlsruhe Looks Back on a Successful 2010
In 2010 FIZ Karlsruhe increased its revenues by approximately 10 percent to a total of 30 million euros. Also in 2010, the Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure started its work on the German Digital Library (DDB) and initiated partnerships in several innovative eScience projects. In addition, the Institute expanded its partnership with Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS).
